How We Met

On October 8, 1988, cool yet comfortable weather embraced South Bend as Larry Loebach and Gina Ameduri exchanged vows at St. Joseph Parish. Cloudy skies yielded to spurts of sunshine as the couple entered married life, on Larry's 30th birthday, no less. The ceremony was as gorgeous as it was consequential — the Best Man, Terry McFadden, would one day become their youngest daughter's father in law. Larry and Terry's late nights on the town and fishing trips with their friends gave way to family life, as both went on to raise three children. Larry and Gina were blessed with three girls, Julianna, Angela and Gabriella. Terry and Laurie, three boys, Michael, Sean and Charlie. More than two decades later, Michael and Gabriella would be blessed to have each other. Despite the family ties, proximity, two years of overlap at St. Joseph’s High School and two more at Saint Mary's and Notre Dame, Michael and Gabriella’s first encounter was substantially delayed. Delayed, but inevitable. The families had often crossed paths around town, usually at Rocco's, the beloved Italian restaurant founded by Gina's parents in 1951 and a McFadden family favorite for the better part of a century. Rocco's was the birthplace of Larry and Gina's love story, as uncle Dennis McFadden played matchmaker and not-so-subtly encouraged Larry to strike up conversation with Gina one fateful night at the restaurant. Naturally, it was a 2021 Rocco's rendezvous between the McFadden and Loebach parents that led to an idea: what if Michael and Gabriella, the only unattached children of the families, got together? Unsurprisingly, neither Michael nor Gabriella were receptive to their parents' dating advice, but they added each other on Instagram. Months later, Michael was approached about a job at Notre Dame and he moved home after just under six years in Chicago. "Just look at how beautiful she is. And she has dimples!" Laurie would exclaim as Michael begrudgingly showed her Gabriella's Instagram when the now-coworkers would meet for lunch. "When are you going to ask her out?", usually followed. Unable to resist any longer, Michael called Gabriella. From the first hello, the conversation unfolded with ease, like two old friends rediscovering each other. Laughter punctuated their words, each joke and shared story weaving a tapestry of familiarity that felt both unexpected and perfectly natural. After wooing each other with warmth and humor, they agreed to meet at a cocktail bar on a Friday in April 2023. One too many drinks fueled the best first date either had ever had. They'll never look back. And now, Michael and Gabriella dine at Rocco's together.
