Hop on the historic St. Charles Streetcar and ride it out to the Garden District. It’s one of the most charming (and scenic) ways to see the city. Once you arrive, stroll through the neighborhood and admire the stunning historic homes and mansions—some of the most beautiful architecture in New Orleans.
Magazine Street is long, eclectic, and full of personality. You’ll find a mix of boutiques, vintage shops, home décor, art, and local favorites. It's perfect for wandering without an agenda.
In the French Quarter, take time to explore Royal Street. It’s lined with antique shops, art galleries, and street musicians, and feels like a quieter, more refined counterpoint to Bourbon Street.
Try to snag a seat at the iconic Carousel Bar inside Hotel Monteleone. The bar slowly rotates, but even if you don’t get a seat right at the carousel, the ambiance throughout the bar is absolutely worth the stop. Pro Tip: arrive around 10:30 AM to join the line inside the hotel lobby. Bar opens at 11 AM.
New Orleans history is best told after dark. Check out one of the French Quarter’s ghost tours—there are many excellent options. We personally had an amazing experience with Nightly Spirits, but you really can’t go wrong.
If you’re craving an authentic New Orleans po’boy, Quarter Deli is a must. This unassuming neighborhood spot is known for its hot roast beef po’boys—rich, messy, and packed with flavor in the best possible way. Micaela’s go-to order includes bacon (highly recommended if you like a little extra crunch), while Justin prefers his without, both are excellent, so you really can’t go wrong. (Pro Tip: Order online and pick up)
For one of the best burgers in the city, head to Port of Call. These burgers are famously simple, juicy, and satisfying. Be sure to order one of their signature drinks, which comes in a massive cup (and yes, you can take it to go). If you are not a drinker, we highly recommend splitting these, they are quite strong, but delicious. It’s a quintessential New Orleans experience and a favorite stop for us. Justin took Micaela here for her 30th birthday steak dinner celebration.
For live music, head to Frenchmen Street. The jazz bars here are legendary. Many venues require reservations, so it’s worth planning ahead. Some highly popular spots are Bamboulas, The Spotted Cat, and The Blue Nile.
Take a short Uber ride to City Park and explore acres of green space, including the free Besthoff Sculpture Garden. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and a lovely break from the bustle of the Quarter.
