At a mutual friend's party in high school, we met and spent the entire night laughing and showing each other our favorite songs. After watching the sunrise, we grabbed breakfast together then went to Mia's house. We listened to music while lying on the trampoline. Looking for any excuse to continue hanging out, we decided to go to the movies in such a rush that we forgot to check show times. Buying our tickets, we opted for people-watching at Panera, making up the life story of each passerby. We went to see Split before Sykes reluctantly dropped Mia back off at home, completing our full 17-hour "first date" as it were. The following day, Mia showed Sykes the playlist she had made for him titled Sike. We still listen to Sike to this day and continue to add songs to it. While listening to the playlist, Sykes asked Mia to be his girlfriend after only knowing each other for 48 hours. Two weeks later, he was telling her that he loved her.
Sykes' POV: Mia and I had been planning our trip to Italy for two years. We were originally going to go in 2020, but for obvious reasons that didn't happen. We had also agreed that neither of us wanted to be engaged during college. So I gave it a three-month grace period and started planning to pop the question on our dream trip abroad. Mia's love for surprises is only surpassed by her desire to figure them out before they happen. Therefore, I knew I needed to go full secret agent for this operation. I designed a ring and went to a boutique custom shop that could make my design a reality. I made sure that they never sent me anything in writing and handled everything over my work phone to prevent any leaks. I would leave on my lunch breaks from work to meet with the jewelers. Eventually, I had the ring and hoped my plot was still kept under wraps. Then I just needed to travel with a ring halfway across the world and keep it hidden but on my person for safekeeping. Easy. Finally, the day comes for our nice dinner and I know she suspects that something will happen there. Luckily, I had planned for a photographer to meet us on the beach in Positano at sunset. The surprise went off without a hitch, if we discount the 20-minute stroke I had starting at our first steps away from our Airbnb and until she said yes. I am grateful every day that she did, and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with the girl of my dreams. Mia's POV: I would love to say that I was completely surprised by the proposal, but I think almost everyone knew that I was coming back from Italy engaged. I will say that Sykes was able to surprise me with the actual proposal. I figured the proposal was going to happen at the restaurant Li Galli that we had reservations for that evening. Instead, Sykes told me that there was a surprise before dinner and we would need to meet someone at the docks at 5pm. I figured it was a sunset boat tour, but in reality, he had a photographer waiting for us on the beach. I still remember being annoyed that Sykes was asking me to come to walk on the beach because I didn't want to get my feet all sandy. As soon as I realized what was happening, I looked around and saw the photographers before I started crying. I asked "Is this actually happening?" while he got on one knee. Next thing I know, I am saying yes and hugging Sykes. We then had an engagement photo shoot for the next hour before we had some free time to facetime friends and family. At dinner, Sykes surprised me with a bouquet of roses at the rooftop bar at Li Galli. It was all so beautiful and surreal. It was the most perfect day and Sykes did such a wonderful job planning it all. Also props to him for being able to surprise me (aka the ace detective who ruins all surprises for herself).
