After a few years of dating and puppy parenting, we decided it was time to make it official. Jeremiah proceeded to drive Mia crazy for months by only saying that he was “working on something” everytime she asked when he was going to propose... Planning for the proposal actually began several months before, when Jeremiah asked his family about whether there were any unfinished quilt pieces left when his paternal grandmother, Kathryn McVay, passed away in 2014. There were, so Jeremiah got in touch with Mia's mother Suzanne -- an accomplished quilter herself -- to inquire about whether she'd be up for a project. She was, so the quilt pieces were shipped from Missouri to Florida, where a new quilt, begun by Jeremiah's grandmother and completed by Mia's mother, was created. As the quilt secretly arrived in New York, we designed an engagement ring that incorporated the diamond from Jeremiah's maternal grandmother, Floy Smithson’s, engagement ring. The excitement built...and then Jeremiah suggested a trip upstate to do some star gazing celebrate Mia’s birthday and our four year anniversary. We headed out to a local reservoir to stargaze. While there, Jeremiah suspiciously went back to the car to “get something” and Mia knew it was ON. As he revealed the quilt to Mia, he explained the story behind it while simultaneously reaching into its folds to pull out the ring! And, well... she said yes, obviously.
We met in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, on May 21, 2015, at a spot called Butter & Scotch, known for both cocktails and desserts (two of our favorite things!). Coincidentally, we lived just around the corner from each other (and had lived a block away from each other in Bushwick several years prior!). Eventually, we moved into an apartment in Chelsea, Manhattan, where we stayed for three years. Now, since November 2019, we're living in Austin, Texas. Jeremiah grew up in Texas and Louisiana, while Mia grew up in Florida... but it turns out one side of Mia's family is from the same area of Louisiana that Jeremiah is from. We've also been lucky enough to do quite a bit of traveling together... we've made it to Ecuador, Iceland, Mexico, Spain, Morocco, the Azores, the Dominican Republic and Jordan so far. Don't be surprised if these places are represented in some way at the wedding!
