The famous Smugglers’ Notch is a narrow pass through the Green Mountains. Lined with 1,000-foot cliffs, the winding road is closed in winter. In the earlier days, only a footpath and trail for horses existed here. In 1807, President Thomas Jefferson passed an embargo act forbidding American trade with Great Britain and Canada. This was a severe hardship for northern Vermonters, since Montreal was closer than other markets in the US. Many local people continued illegal trade with Canada, herding cattle and carrying other goods through the Notch. Later, fugitive slaves used the Notch as an escape route to Canada. During the Prohibition years, liquor was smuggled from Canada over the improved road built in 1922.

For The Sound of Music fans; The Trapp Family Lodge is open for tours. The History of the von Trapp Family THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY In the early 1940s, the von Trapp family toured the United States as the Trapp Family Singers before eventually settling in Stowe, Vermont, on an enchanted farm with sweeping mountain vistas reminiscent of their beloved Austria. In the summer of 1950, they began welcoming guests to a rustic, 27-room family home/lodge. After a devastating fire in 1980, the original structure was replaced by the new Trapp Family Lodge, a striking, 96-room alpine lodge situated on 2,600 acres offering magnificent indoor and outdoor resort amenities. The entire property is owned and operated by the von Trapp family. You can learn all about the von Trapp family history by taking a tour.
The Trapp family history coupled with Johannes von Trapp’s genuine appreciation for Austrian style-beer inspired the mission of von Trapp Brewing: to create a traditional European lager – clean, light, crisp beer that boasts a robust flavor. The von Trapp Brewery currently produces several lagers brewed from the finest authentic Austrian ingredients and their own pure Vermont spring water. The Bierhall is conveniently attached to the von Trapp Brewery, situated on the cross-country ski and mountain bike trails of the Trapp Family Lodge’s 60km of private trails. The Bierhall is a gathering place serving fresh lager beers and a selection of freshly prepared Austrian lunch and dinner selections. Many of the menu items are prepared on the wood-fired Parrilla grill that is the showcase feature of the Bierhall.

Kathy Kneale and her son Andrew Kneale opened Harrison's Restaurant in December of 2003. Their goal was to create a restaurant that was a reflection of each of their lives growing up and working in Stowe. Utilizing Kathy's experience of over 35 years of owning and operating two other restaurants in town, they wanted a place where locals and visitors alike could enjoy comfortable, creative and local food in an environment that was casual yet upscale and unique to Stowe. A place where you could meet old friend and new, have a romantic date night out or just to unwind with a nice glass of wine. Harrison's is their creation of what they think dining should be: memorable, and most of all, fun. Harrison's truly is a family run business. Andrew can be found in the dining room each night and Kathy is always busy in the kitchen creating all of the desserts for the menu or greeting old guests and new. They look forward to your visit and remind you; At Harrison's, you're always among friends!
