James W. Calkins and his family moved to Santa Barbara where, in 1878, he built one of the largest homes in downtown Santa Barbara at the time. Calkins was a prominent Santa Barbara banking executive and the mansion was nicknamed "Calkins Castle." The house was remodeled top to bottom in 1922 in the Spanish Colonial Revival style and today is home to the University Club.
