Please contact your health insurance provider before traveling to determine your international coverage. Some insurance companies may require you to pay for medical services upfront and submit documentation for reimbursement afterward.
If you need over-the-counter medicine, you can visit a pharmacy. In Italy, pharmacies are called “Farmacia” and are usually marked with a green cross sign. Some Conad supermarket locations also have smaller in-store pharmacies called “Parafarmacia,” which carry a more limited selection of over-the-counter medications and health products.
Highways in Italy generally accept credit and debit cards, and many toll lanes are labeled “Carte” for card payments. However, we still recommend bringing some euros in cash, just to be safe. You can usually exchange currency or request euros from your bank before traveling.
We recommend checking with your credit card company to see if your card offers zero foreign transaction fees, as this can be much more cost-effective while traveling internationally. If you use a debit card or a credit card that charges foreign transaction fees, you may incur an additional surcharge of approximately 3% on purchases made abroad.
We recommend contacting your phone carrier before traveling to see if they offer an international plan. For example, Verizon offers an international plan for approximately $20 per month, which includes unlimited talk, text, and data. We do not recommend waiting until you arrive in Italy to purchase a SIM card, as many major Italian carriers require a local Italian address to activate service. If you prefer not to use your phone carrier abroad, we recommend downloading WhatsApp before your trip so you can communicate using Wi-Fi.
Conad is a popular supermarket chain in Italy that is somewhat comparable to a mix between Walmart and ShopRite. They carry most everyday essentials at reasonable prices, including snacks, drinks, toiletries, and groceries. Many locations also have a hot food station and bakery section where you can purchase fresh sandwiches and prepared foods. Most Conad locations also offer free parking. P.S. Italy does not have Costco, Target, or Walmart stores.
Yes. Italy uses a VAT (Value Added Tax), which is similar to sales tax. On eligible purchases, travelers may be able to receive a VAT refund. Be sure to keep your receipts. At the airport, you can sign up for a free Global Blue membership and submit your eligible receipts to request a refund for the VAT paid on qualifying purchases. For more details, review the websites below: https://taxation-customs.ec.europa.eu/taxation/vat_en https://www.globalblue.com/en
Italy has a large electronics store chain called MediaWorld, which is similar to Best Buy in the United States. They carry phone chargers, adapters, travel kits, and other electronics. Please note that Italy uses different wall outlets than the United States, so U.S. plugs will require a travel adapter in order to work.
