Fellows Riverside Gardens is Fellows Riverside Gardens is the culmination of Elizabeth Fellows’ dream to create a beauty spot for all to enjoy. Mrs. Fellows willed the land and money to Mill Creek MetroParks to build and maintain a free public garden. In 1958, Elizabeth died at the age of 96 in her home. Since its first planting in 1963, the Gardens has been shaped by the generosity of many people. The design of Fellows Riverside Gardens was conceived and implemented by Landscape Architect John L. Paolano in 1962. As a foundation for the design, he maintained the existing rolling landscape and the two distinct overlooks.
The Butler Institute of American Art was founded in 1919 by Joseph G. Butler, Jr., and dedicated as the country’s first museum devoted entirely to American art. The museum's collection totals over 20,000 pieces in all media, and spans four centuries of work. Constructed of Georgian marble in the Italian Renaissance Revival style, the original museum structure is a McKim, Mead and White architectural masterpiece listed on the National Register of Historic places.
In case you need to get some gambling in - Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course features over 850 video lottery terminals (VLTs). The facility is complete with entertainment and sports bars, clubhouse dining, concession stands, as well as a food court. The gaming facility is adjacent to a one-mile thoroughbred race course, with racing October-April.
One of Mahoning County’s most historic and most photographed landmarks, Lanterman’s Mill & Covered Bridge was built in 1845-46 by German Lanterman and Samuel Kimberly. Restored in 1982-85, this community treasure represents one of the many pioneer industries developed along Mill Creek and operates today as it did in the 1800s, grinding corn and wheat. Part of Mill Creek MetroParks, enjoy the scenic overlook and Lanterman’s Falls, the covered bridge, and hiking trails.
Greystone, the magnificent 1905 Arts & Crafts-style residence of Olive and Wilford Arms, is preserved a century later as the Arms Family Museum of Local History. The first floor features original period rooms that highlight the Arms’ love of handicraft, medieval architecture and the natural environment. The lower level and second floor showcase a complete history of life in the Mahoning Valley, from the earliest evidence of human habitation in the Valley, to yesterday’s fads. The John J. McDonough Museum of Art, founded in 1991, is the University Art Museum for Youngstown State University and the Valley’s premier Center for Contemporary Art. Housed in a twenty thousand square foot facility designed by internationally known architects Gwathmey Siegel & Associates, the Museum stands as a testament to High Modernist design. The McDonough features changing exhibitions, installations, performances and lectures by regional, national and international artists. It also functions as public outreach for the Cliffe College of Creative Arts and Communication and the Department of Art, exhibiting work by students, faculty and alumni. In addition, the Museum offers free lectures, performances and programs organized in collaboration with varying departments on campus and the community at large.
