The Lao Ceremony is a portrayal of a solider coming home from war. The groom will parade around outside with his family, relatives, & friends to announce to everyone that a wedding is taking place. Musical instruments & singing is a common way to celebrate and be joyous. To shield the groom from the sun, 1 person will be designated to hold an umbrella for him. In order for the groom to get to his bride, he must pass through 2 "Chain Doors" by offering gifts (money) to the guardians (family/close friend's of the bride). A toast (typically a shot) is then shared by both parties as a sign of peace and unity. The bride's younger female relative will then sprinkle water on the groom's feet to symbolize a cleanse. The groom will then enter to meet his bride. Once he reaches the bride, he will then light 2 candles tied together by string (to represent the bride and groom joining together). The speaker will then start prayers. Afterwards, the guests will part-take in a blessings ceremony
The guests will line up behind immediate family and are given the chance to bless the marriage. They will do this by saying their blessings while tying a white string around their wrists. It is custom to tie a string on both the groom and bride.
A speaker will chant prayers to bless the couple. During this portion, the bridge and groom will share an egg. The egg symbolizes purity and a new life--their bodies and souls are blessed and cleansed as they embark on their journey together. During the ceremony we ask that guest do not speak.
The bride's friends or family will be seated inside the venue awaiting the groom's arrival. There will be chairs for everyone to be seated. The groom's friends and family will start outside and part-take in the parade and enter after the groom.
Semi-Formal attire is suggested; **please do not wear all black
The ceremony will be performed in Lao.
No! Some people choose to attend the reception portion only. However, for close family and friends it is highly suggested you attend the ceremony.
