In June 2016, I flew to Houston with my friend Melanie as part of our ongoing mission to see the Cincinnati Reds play in every Major League stadium. Before the game, a random guy—also a Reds fan—approached us and asked if we were from Houston. We explained that we were actually from California and were following the Reds to all 30 MLB parks. To our surprise, he was doing the exact same thing. He introduced us to his girlfriend, who didn’t seem particularly thrilled, and after a brief chat, we all went our separate ways. Over the next seven years, we had several near misses—crossing paths and just missing each other at various ballparks across the country. It wasn’t until June 2023, when the Reds finally returned to Camden Yards in Baltimore, that the stars (and a few rain delays) finally aligned. And the rest, as they say, is history.
