FAQs

Question

Will I need a passport?

Answer

Yes! Traveling outside of the country will require a passport, so please make sure yours is valid! If you do not have a passport yet, we recommend applying for one at least a couple of months in advance!

Question

What is the currency in Guatemala?

Answer

The Quetzal (Q or GTQ) is the national currency in Guatemala. If you wish to travel with cash, we recommend exchanging currency at your hotel or at the banks once you are in Antigua, as they will have the best exchange rates. Most places (except street vendors) accept American credit and debit cards if you prefer not to travel with cash.

Question

What if I don't speak Spanish?

Answer

We know many of our guests do not speak Spanish, and this may be a common question. Antigua, Guatemala is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, bringing in tourists from all parts of the world. Most hotels and public establishments, like restaurants, stores, and bars, will have staff who speak English. That being said, it's still not a bad idea to start brushing up on your high school Spanish!

Question

What do I need to know about flying into/out of Guatemala?

Answer

Like most foreign countries, you will be required to fill out a Travler Affidavit when flying into and out of the country. The form can be completed within the 3 days leading up to landing in Guatemala and again within the 3 days prior to leaving Guatemala. It can be found at https://cdn.c.sat.gob.gt/declaDelViajeroGt-web/pages/public/declaracionJuradaDelViajero.html. If you land in Guatemala without the form completed, you will have the opportunity to complete it on your phone or at computer stations before going through customs. Similarly, you will also have the chance to complete the form at the airport the day you fly out, before going through TSA.
