The Proposal

Lake Powell, House Boat Trip, UT. September 2023

Alas, the story of the proposal. Late at night, hanging with the fam, whilst looking through a telescope on the top deck of the memorable Dillenburg house boat, parked in a small cove on Lake Powell - we found Saturn! Guys we found Saturn, and Saturn’s rings. What an indescribable feeling to see the rings of Saturn illuminated in this little eyehole connected to plastic and glass, in the middle of dark nighttime and wilderness. Devon decided to take this once in a lifetime, beautiful opportunity to propose. Awwww Saturn’s rings, Melissa’s ring - CUTE. He nailed it. He had his Mom, Marlinda, smuggle the ring on board the house boat knowing full well that Melissa would know the ring was there if he’d packed it casually in his bag. Mel is the packer and knows everything that’s in that bag, gosh darn it. Not this time folks, nay nay. Devon surprised her! We wanted it to be a surprise, because Melissa was in on the purchase of the ring too. So, kinda hard to surprise when it’s not a surprise, ya know? But he did it! Huge shout out to Marlinda for her help. Devon popped the question, and you might think it gets less awkward from here, amiright? Nope. In fact, Melissa’s first words after the question were.. “But Rachel is right there!” His sister was still on the top deck with us, looking to see Saturn through the telescope for herself. Melissa was caught off guard so much that her first thought was about the people “in the room” and if it was ok to kiss Devon in front of them. She then lifted her hand to Devon for a high five and said “good job!” and “thanks!” and finally, after Devon repeats the question did she then reply with “of course yes!” What a fairytale eh? We do love being non-traditional so there ya go.
