It all started in Charlotte, NC, when Melissa joined a friend for a spontaneous night out—not knowing it would change her life forever. That night turned out to be a birthday celebration for Derrick’s cousin, and Melissa and Derrick ended up sharing a dance that sparked a connection. Before the evening ended, they exchanged numbers. As Derrick walked Melissa back to her car, they chatted for a while—until Melissa noticed something unusual. Derrick’s tongue was bleeding (yes, bleeding)—he had accidentally bitten it mid-conversation. Ever the caretaker, Melissa handed him some napkins and made sure he was okay. Later that night, Derrick texted to make sure she made it home safely, and the rest is history. Though Derrick was living in Philadelphia at the time, he reassured Melissa that he was in North Carolina often—and to her surprise, he really was. Despite the distance, their friendship grew into a lasting relationship built on love, laughter, and lots of travel. In August 2024, during a beautiful trip to the Dominican Republic, Derrick got down on one knee and asked Melissa to be his forever. She said yes! Now establishing a life together in Arlington, VA, they’re excited to begin this next chapter and can’t wait to celebrate with all of you!
