Question

*** Venue Update ***

Answer

Update: After consulting with NOAA, the Hurricane center and the wind and weather gods….they have determined that it will not be safe to have the reception in the tent. The ceremony and reception will be held in the Mt. Washington Room in the Commons building which is at 59 Pineland Drive. Parking is located at the building. Due to the probability of Hurricane Lee hitting the coast or Maine, the folks at Pineland Farms have been following all the weather updates closely. The primary concern is safety, so the decision to move the ceremony and reception inside will be made accordingly. If that is the case, it will be held in the Mt. Washington Room in the Commons Building. As soon as we receive word, we will update you all here. Stay tuned and in the meantime, keep your fingers crossed! Thanks for your patience and understanding!

Question

Tell me about Pineland Farms

Answer

Pineland Farms is a 5,000 acre working farm, whose mission is to provide a productive and educational venue that enriches the community by demonstrating responsible farming techniques, offering educational opportunities and encouraging a healthy lifestyle through recreation. Built in 1908 as the Maine School for the Feeble-Minded to house people with developmental disabilities, it’s population also included mentally ill, poor, destitute persons and other wards of the state. Many residents worked at Valley and Hill Farms providing food for the campus, as well as learning various trades. In 2000, the Libra Foundation purchased the property four years after the state closed the institution, then known as Pineland Center. Since then the nonprofit’s charitable revitalization of the campus has made Pineland Farms one of Maine’s agricultural giants. Pineland Farms provides local milk and fresh seasonal produce to many area retailers. The farm includes dairy barns housing 150 head of Holstein cows, and an Angus beef herd of 24 head, which are raised naturally and are pastured on the south side of Valley Farm and in the cow barn. In addition there is the family farmyard, a smoke house, a sugar house, 300 acres of cultivated crops, and a market with a wide array of locally sourced produce, meats, cheeses and baked goods. The Equestrian Center is a world class center which includes indoor and outdoor arenas, stabling for 30 Cabot Morgans, housing for athletes and seating for 1100 spectators. Pineland offers 30 kilometers of professionally designed, well-kept trails for biking, walking, trail running, Nordic skiing and snowshoeing, disc golf and tennis courts. It is also home to 3 guest houses, a 224 acre rural office park, the YMCA, state and national agencies, medical and technology companies, and schools, the latest addition being Unity College’s Technical Institute for Environmental Professions.

Question

Where is the parking located at Pineland?

Answer

***See Venue Update***. The parking area is a U-shaped lot located directly behind the Conference Center at 16 Pineland Drive. As you enter the Pineland Campus on Rt. 231, Intervale Road, there will be a large sign on a stone wall on your left, as well as the right. Continue following Intervale Rd and you will find a blue sign for the Conference Center, where you will then take a left on Pineland Drive, which leads to the parking lot located behind the Conference Center. The restrooms are located in the Conference Center. From the back of the building, if you walk toward the right side of the building, you will find a side door which leads to the restrooms. Please see the Gallery section on this website for a map of the Pineland Campus which shows the parking area and the location of The Garden where the ceremony will take place.

Question

Where is the ceremony taking place?

Answer

***See Venue Update***. The ceremony will be held in The Garden, which is surrounded by a white fence, and is located on the corner of route 231, Intervale Road and Freeport Road. *** Please plan to arrive early so you can take a few minutes to walk around and enjoy the garden!*** Prior to parking, guests may also be dropped off at the entrance to the Garden on Intervale Road. From the parking lot located behind the Conference Center, walk toward the right hand side of the Conference Center (you should be facing the back of the building) and follow the path down toward the reception tent. Continue through or around the tent, across the lawn, toward Intervale Road where you will see a crosswalk that leads directly to the entrance to the garden. The ceremony is being held toward the far side of the garden in the orchard. This area can be very sunny, so sunglasses and/or a hat are a must! The ceremony will last approximately a half hour and there will be seating provided. The Garden is a one-acre garden which includes more than 130 varieties of perennials, 6,000 flowering annuals, five different types of blueberry bushes, 20 apple trees, espalier pear trees and an ornamental conifer bed.
