How we met

From Town Hall to "I Do"

I first laid eyes on Eric on February 2, 2020 — my very first day working at Brookhaven Town Hall. My boss, Neil, was giving me the grand tour of the building. When we reached the Town Council offices, the door opened… and there he was. We were introduced briefly, nothing dramatic. But as Eric walked away, I turned to Neil and very casually said, “Does he work here? Because if he does… then I definitely can work here.” And just like that, the universe quietly took notes. I found out a year later that Eric remembered that day very differently than he let on. He remembered exactly what I was wearing — black pants, a black sweater, and leopard heels. He remembered that I was tan (something we both take very seriously). One month after I started, the world shut down due to COVID. Offices closed. Life paused. And just like that, whatever that little spark was — it had to wait. We didn’t see each other again until May 4th the following year. I remember the date clearly because it was Neil’s first fundraiser post-COVID and the theme was “May the Fourth Be With You.” Eric walked into that fundraiser and within seconds, our common friend and my co-worker in the office, Anthony Powell announced, “Eric, have you met Meghan? She’s recently single and left her ex-boyfriend in Miami!” Which… was very true. And also mortifying. And also absolutely perfect. Thanks to Anthony and our friend Michelle DiBrita fully driving the ship, Eric and I ended up talking for a good portion of the night. Easy conversation. Effortless laughter. The kind of comfort that feels familiar way too quickly. And in true full-circle fashion, it was also the night Eric met his soon-to-be father-in-law — the man, the myth, the legend, Raymond Quinlan. No pressure! After that night, it seemed like Eric suddenly had a lot more ‘business’ at Town Hall. If he was in the building for work, he made it a point to stop in to Town Council to visit. I found out later that he was simply “putting me through an interview process”. Apparently, it was a very thorough interview. About a month long. Meanwhile, I could not have dropped more hints that we should just go on a date already. Truly. The hints were aggressive. And yet…..nothing. Finally — after what felt like the longest professional courtship in history — he asked me out. On June 9, 2021, we went on what we both agree was the most perfect first date. We went to dinner in Northport, talked for hours about life, family, and ironically how neither of us ever wanted to get married again (the foreshadowing was strong). We got ice cream, walked the harbor for what felt like hours, and shared a kiss that honestly belonged in a movie. I remember getting into my car that night and immediately calling my mom. I told her, “That was the best first date I’ve ever been on.” And I also heard from a little birdie the next day (Michelle) that Eric told her he was smitten… just saying. From that day forward, it has been smooth sailing — not because life hasn’t had challenges, but because we face everything as a team. We became each other’s safest place. The best travel partners. The best friends. The kind of partners who laugh constantly and somehow make even ordinary days feel fun. We both went through our own versions of life challenges to get here. But every detour, every lesson, every chapter led us exactly where we were meant to be — standing in a Town Hall doorway, completely unaware that our timing was finally perfect. And now here we are — the two people who once swore we’d never do this again — choosing forever. Turns out… the interview process was worth it.
