A setup for the ages

Our story started in 2020, thanks to two people who knew us well enough to see something before we did. As Harrison was preparing to move from Chicago to Austin, Dom and Susie connected us — and what began as a setup quickly became the start of something much bigger. What followed was a series of dates from afar. Harrison would send calendar invites with cocktail recipes attached, and we would make the same drink in different cities. We cooked dinner over video, planned little activities, and talked for hours. One of those cocktails was the Oaxacanite, which became a favorite and will make its return at our welcome party. Somewhere in those early conversations, Meghan mentioned that she collected vintage love letters and old love stories. Harrison later shared letters his great-grandmother had written to her late husband. It was quiet, generous, and deeply personal — the kind of moment that tells you something about a person before they ever try to explain themselves. By the time Harrison arrived in Austin, something real had already begun. They settled him into his new home a tiny bungalow off South Congress and started building a life in the way we know best: through good food, open doors, too many animals, and plans that somehow always turn into a full production. There were dinner parties, boat days, new restaurants, pottery classes, holidays taken very seriously, Caribbean sailing with our people, horseback rides tied to Buck's childhood, and plenty of spoiling Matilda, Figg, and Fatty. Over time, the distance that started our relationship became the thing that made it clear. We had learned each other slowly and honestly, without much to hide behind. The old letters Meghan loved became new ones from Harrison. The virtual drinks became a home full of people. The beginning that felt unlikely became the life we kept choosing. On Christmas morning in 2023, Meghan’s favorite day of the year, Harrison proposed at home in front of the tree, with just the two of us and our animals there. It was private, simple, and exactly right. Now, we get to celebrate in the place where so much of our life has been built: at home, around a table, with the people we love most.
