Though they attended the same high school, Megan and Mac did not officially meet until the summer of 2011 at a dive bar in their hometown. Mac was preparing to ship off to basic training, and Megan was home having arguably the best summer of her life with high school friends following the end of sophomore year. There's more to that story (we'll leave it up to the MOH to fill you in), but suffice it to say that Megan and Mac immediately hit it off and were friends for two years before Megan finally professed her love. The pair then embarked on a long-distance relationship spanning six years, three countries, six states, and ten cities, before Megan finally moved to Virginia in April 2019.
Megan and Mac went to a Syracuse basketball game one December afternoon. 'Cuse won that game (a rare occurrence), and to round out a perfect day in Upstate New York, they stopped for dinner with friends. After indulging in the finer things (aka pulled pork and IPAs) Megan knew she had to rush back to Clinton to prepare for the annual Ugly Sweater Party that night. Her sneaky friends were all on board and coaxed her home with the promise of pomegranate martinis. Mac pulled a fast one and said they had to swing by the McLean's house instead, and Megan, thinking she was being deprived of an ugly sweater AND Christmas martinis, was not exactly pleased. She thought nothing of it, though, and was truly in shock when Mac asked her to marry him in his driveway surrounded by snow and Christmas lights in the town where they fell in love. Megan's friends caught the whole thing on video, while the rest of their crew hid in the house for a surprise party. After about an hour, Megan could finally speak again, and they celebrated the night away!
Three months before Mac deployed and on very short notice, we decided to tie the knot on September 4, 2020 at the Carlyle House public garden in Old Town Alexandria! In true 2020 fashion, we had no guests, our "ceremony" was 45 seconds, and Megan forgot the marriage certificates. We celebrated with dinner and drinks at one of our favorite dives. We mini-mooned in Onancock, Virginia on the Eastern Shore, fell in love with the town, and bought a house there! All things considered, we had a wonderful first "wedding," but missed our friends and family too much. They say you only get married once, but we think the second time's a charm, and cannot wait to celebrate with our closest friends and family.
