How we met

2/26/2023

The internet is wonderful. Through the internet, you can shop, make video calls with loved ones, and even (as many have proven) find love. Before they met, Karl and Megan were just lonely people who didn’t expect to find and fall in love with a stranger through the internet, but lucky for them, it happened anyway. After finding each other, and some text messaging, they started talking. They talked A LOT. Almost every day for hours on end they talked about everything under the sun. Karl learned that Megan’s favorite color was purple. Megan learned Karl’s favorite color was blue. Karl learned that Megan played softball, and Megan learned that Karl played football. Karl learned that Megan had similar values and life goals as he had, and Megan learned that about Karl, too. After all, they weren’t just talking about their life story up to that point. This was about deciding whether to stitch their life stories together. Talking on the phone and doing video calls is fun and informative, but the real test is physically seeing each other in person. A real-life date. In many love stories, this could be going to see a movie, or going out to dinner together; for Karl and Megan, this meant flying away from home to a place neither of them had ever been to before. Megan bravely took the first flight to Minnesota in May of 2023, just a couple of months after meeting Karl. Thankfully, it went great! Sure, they went for walks, visited Minnehaha Falls, and Karl took Megan out to dinner, but Megan got to see that Karl wasn’t really faking being such a weirdo when he made her watch How to Talk Minnesotan and made her zucchini with WAY too much ginger on it (why he did that in the first place is a mystery). Even so, Megan decided she still wanted to be with Karl, and Karl was beginning to think the same thing. Next, it was Karl’s turn to visit Oklahoma, over 4th of July. Karl had a wonderful time meeting Megan’s parents and Megan’s cats, going out on Lake Eufaula, eating lots of yummy food and seeing what it was like to be a part of the Whorton family. Megan even took Karl to the aquarium! This trip had its fair share of challenges too. It was hot; Karl got sunburned (it was definitely his own fault); and Megan and Karl drove around for over an hour trying to find a place that was open on the 4th of July for dinner. However, even while Megan was apologizing profusely about not planning a place in advance, Karl was happy just spending time with her, even if it meant driving aimlessly around Broken Arrow.

The decision

As time went on, they went on many more adventures, and still talked to each other every day. Almost every month, Karl would fly down to Oklahoma or Megan would fly up to Minnesota. Since up until more recently Karl was in law school and Megan is still finishing up medical school, they didn’t quite have the time to drive to each other. No matter how long the stay was, it never really was long enough. Sure, it usually was only for 3-4 days, but it was extra special when they could stay longer with each other, like when Megan stayed up in Minnesota for Christmas, or when Karl went to Oklahoma while he was studying for the bar exam. Through all the visiting, talking, and dreaming about the future they might have together, there had to be a decision. Would they get married? Yes, they would! Karl sneakily got a ring for Megan, asked for her parents’ blessing, and he then had to find the perfect time to propose. Luckily enough for him, Megan had wanted to do a little bit of a getaway after both she and Karl took their big exams. This was the perfect opportunity to surprise Megan! Karl anxiously flew down to Oklahoma one more time in August, though this time trying his best to conceal a ring box in his bag. He succeeded, and shocked Megan when he proposed, leaving a big ol’ smile on her face when she said yes through her happy tears. Since then, there’s been a lot of planning for the wedding, and we hope that you’ll join us!
