How We Met

They say opposites attract. That couldn't be more true with Megan and I. Megan grew up in Williston while I have lived most of my life in Grand Forks. She went to college at NDSU, while I stayed close to home and chose to attend UND. Fast forward several years. I found a statewide charity called Chive On North Dakota (COND) to lend a helping hand to. This is how I met the woman of my dreams. I was invited down to a birthday party for a fellow member of COND. I walked in to the party, and there she was sitting on a barstool by a mutual friend. I didn't know it then, but this would be the woman who I would ask to marry me. A few months later we attended a charity bike race in Bismarck. It was here that I finally told her how I felt. To my surprise she liked me too. That was on April 10th of 2017.

The Proposal

A year had passed since we started on our journey. We had many long nights filled with conversation. We saw movies and like most couples went out for dinner. Even with all that we were most comfortable just at home cozy on the couch watching a movie. Just being in the moment was enough for the two of us. We had been with each other for a little over a year when I knew she was the one for me. Megan told me from the beginning that if we were to get married I would have to ask her father for her hand. We were at Fort Union in Williston for the Rendezvous when I asked her father for permission. I will never forget that. I stumbled on my words when I asked her father Ron. My heart sank when he jokingly told me no. He only let me think I couldn't marry her for a few seconds before telling me he was just joking. That was Father's Day weekend in June of 2018. A few months later and we finally arrived at the big day. September 13th of 2018 was when I popped the question. The entire day I was rehearsing what I would say. As my workday came to a close my heart was beating out of my chest. I knew where I would pop the question. I knew what I would say. Now the only thing left to do was ask. That evening we went out to dinner at the King House buffet in downtown Fargo. Megan had to have known something was up when I barely ate any of my food. After this we walked over to the Drekker Brewery just around the corner. It was real now. I had the ring in my pocket. I was terrified as I had never done this before. The words were there, but came out jumbled. What I practiced was not what came out. Still though at the end of the day, she said yes, and made me the happiest I have ever been. I couldn't be happier to have her by my side through everything. She is my rock and my best friend. I don't know what the future holds for us. All I know is that we will tackle it together with love and an enduring friendship that can't be broken.
