The Area

Milton is about 2.5 hours from Chicago, an hour from Milwaukee and half hour from Madison. There are a lot of great hiking and camping opportunities in the surrounding area including Starved Rock State Park in Illinois (https://dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.starvedrock.html), Devils Lake in Baraboo WI (https://www.devilslakewisconsin.com/), and Ice Age Trail in WI (https://www.iceagetrail.org/) among others. The Wisconsin Dells is also great for kids and families and is about 1.5 hours away (https://www.wisdells.com/). It also has a renowned spa (https://www.sundaraspa.com/).

Travel Note

Air Travel Information

The nearest airports will be Madison and Rochester (both about 45 minutes away) and they are small so convenient. Flight options, however, will be more limited and direct flights will be unlikely. Milwaukee is about an hour and 20 minutes but will have more options than the regional airports. It is still small-ish so convenient but still unlikely to get direct flights. Chicago is the final option which is about 2-2.5 hours away depending on traffic. Direct and cheaper flights are more likely but getting out of Chicago is pretty unpleasant for most people if they're unaccustomed to driving in truly big city traffic.
