The year was 2011 where this girl, (Jakya) Kellie Brooks, and this guy, Derek Harrison, met for the first time at a local Farm Fresh where they both worked in their hometown of Norfolk, Virginia. Their casual friendship grew over endless rounds of Words with Friends. The years that would follow would bring good times of movie nights, social outings, their plus one to events; as well as tough times which required being a rock when the other needed it. But she wasn’t ready…yet…until she discovered that sometimes in loss there is a gain. Love is patient, love is kind. 1 Corinthians 13:4

In June 2017, God called Kellie’s mother Home. This was a huge loss for her and in it she saw who was really there in her corner to lift her up and get her through it all. It was Derek in particular who was there. After serious introspection, Kellie knew that she could not live without him in her life. Actually, the thought of him not being in her life was heartbreaking in itself. Coming to that realization, Derek and Kellie officially started dating on July 29, 2017. From there a lot of miles were put on their cars due to their short but long distance relationship. Valentine’s Day of 2018, Derek gifted Kellie with little Miss Bardi. While continuing to grow their relationship shortly thereafter, Derek relocated to be with his girls. Do everything in love. 1 Corinthians 16:14

Little did Kellie know that Derek had not only been playing their games to win, but he was also playing for keeps. He spent months planning for the perfect time to pop the big question even soliciting the help of her friends to ensure Kellie’s surprise. On November 1, 2020 what Kellie thought was her best friend’s family brunch quickly turned into her entering into Derek’s brilliantly executed plan to “put a ring on it.” Walking into what she thought were some quick photos with her friend and her family before brunch, ended up being all eyes on her and her being surrounded by her and Derek’s friends and family. Derek made sure that although not physically there, Kellie’s parents were a part of this moment. Kellie’s mom, Jacqueline, loved flowers and gardens so in remembrance of her, it seemed fitting to propose to Jackie’s daughter in a garden…the Botanical Garden in Norfolk. Due to the ongoing pandemic, Kellie’s father, Willis, was unable to be there in person. However, Derek arranged for Kellie’s father to attend via FaceTime and after Kellie’s tearful “Yes!,” her father was the first person she saw. Sadly, Kellie’s world would be rocked again in the loss of her father by the end of the month. Through it all, Derek never left her side. He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord. Proverbs 18:22

But Oh Baby! There is more. Jaxson Sidney Harrison named after his maternal grandparents made his early debut on September 17, 2022. Born in love with his daddy’s handsome looks and mommy’s personality and cheeks, Jaxson is the perfect angel that makes Derek and Kellie’s heart smile. For this child we Prayed. 1 Samuel 1:27

Who knew that two opponents playing endless rounds of Words with Friends would lead to a love destined for forever. Six years from when Derek and Kellie started dating, their connection has been lovingly nurtured to form an unbreakable bond. And it is official that these two lovebirds…Jaxson and Bardi’s parents will become one on July 29, 2023. What God has joined together, let no man separate. Mark 10:9
