How We Met

The backstory: We were mutual friends of Christy and Steph Praljak. Although we both went to IU and lived next door to each other in Delta Zeta and Delta Tau Delta, we did not know each other there. Our groups of friends began hanging out years after we graduated college. One such outing, we all went to the Old Town Art Fair, where Emily "bamboozled" Danny into buying her a shot of tequila. But alas, there were no sparks in the air... yet. Our love story is one of modern millennial romance, as it all started on Facebook. Fast forward to the Fall of 2016. Emily noticed that Danny had been "liking" quite a few of her Facebook photos. Emily took matters into her own hands and decided to slyly Facebook message Danny asking if he would be attending Christy Praljak's going away party. Danny just assumed Christy had assigned Emily to the task of following up with un-RSVP'd guests.. but boy was he wrong. From there, he immediately asked for Emily's number and the rest is history! Just kidding. We entered into a very slow, painstakingly long exchange of Facebook messages for weeks before he finally asked for her phone number. Our first date was at Emily's apartment where Danny came over with a 6-pack of Bell's Two Hearted Ale and we watched Adam Sandler's movie "The Cobbler." It was love.

The Proposal

It was a lazy Saturday with beautiful weather. Danny's parents were in town for the weekend and we had dinner reservations at 6:30 pm at Kinzie ChopHouse with Emily's parents. Around noon, Emily was about to take a nap. Danny : "Get up! we've got stuff to do today!" Emily (confused): "What are you talking about? It's noon, dinner isn't for hours." Danny: "Well you said you had to get your nails done!" Emily: "I'll just do it tomorrow." (At this point Danny is freaking out because Emily had picked off all of her nail polish at breakfast that morning.) Danny: "Come on! Just go really quick." Emily started to become suspicious because Danny has never once commented on her manicures. When Emily got back, Danny immediately starts packing a cooler. Danny: "Lets go over to that little picnic spot in the grass by Navy Pier." Emily: "But I'm not really hungry right now." Danny: "It's fine, we'll just have a few beers then." Emily is getting very suspicious at this point. Why is he on such a time crunch for a leisurely picnic? And why is he only bringing 2 lousy White Claws? Danny takes Emily to a quiet spot on the grass under a tree, at the furthest point on the lake. We were sitting there for about 30 minutes when Danny turns on "Spirit in the Sky" by Norman Greenbaum on his phone. Emily: "What the heck are we listening to?!" Danny (nervously): "Oh, you're right, weird." He changes the song to "Marry You" by Bruno Mars. At the end of the song, it switched to "Just the Way You Are" by Bruno Mars and he pulled out the ring. Danny: "What would you say if we got married?" Emily started ugly crying and forgot to answer him. About 30 seconds later she said, "Yes! of Course!" and kissed. Then, a few police officers started approaching us because there is a huge sign that says, "NO ALCOHOL ALLOWED, VIOLATORS WILL BE ARRESTED" and Emily is sitting there crying. As soon as they saw the ring, and realized what was happening, they turned around and walked away.
