It All Started With A Skunk

Yes, you read that correctly. Even worse - the skunk was dead. This story doesn’t sound promising, but you know it ends in marriage. The “where”, “how” and “why” of this story is a tale unlike any other. Albany, NY is not Paris. It is romantic on opposite day. Whatever charm and appeal that could be salvaged from the city’s cobblestone roads and industrial-era brick was lost in March of 2015. Another bitter winter left downtown amuck with potholes, ice banks and mud puddles. It was as if hell froze over, thawed out, and then froze again. St. Patrick’s day made for a perfect storm. It was customary to start the holiday at 6 am with shots of whiskey in Albany. You must also partake with others. This wasn’t the first time Kristy and Ryan met. Though, it was first time they took a liking to each other. Which was too bad - Kristy was there to meet a blind date. After a few more shots, Kristy, her date, Ryan, and all their friends headed towards the St. Patrick’s day parade downtown. Here’s where the story gets better. The young college male is competitive. Or dumb, or desperate. That, or Kristy is an awful blind date. Maybe it was a combination of things. Our memory is a bit hazy... Something familiar caught Ryan’s eye in a melted snowbank on Lark Street. It was perfect. It was bold. It was the dead skunk that forever altered the trajectory of destiny, and Ryan bet Kristy’s date a free beer to pick it up. Kristy's date took the bait, and well, her blind date stunk in more ways than one! No amount of tomato baths could save this set up. A sabotaged date lead to an opening. It sparked a connection - a funny story between two acquaintances. Romanced blossomed as quickly and suddenly as Albany's famous tulips by the time April rolled around. Six years and an engagement later, we could not have predicted a better time, place and circumstance to meet. As for Kristy's date? Ryan did follow through with his bet, at least. It was a happily ever after story for all.
