Way back in June 2011, mutual friends and music brought us together one hot summer evening in Brooklyn. As we danced the night away, I made the first “move” by aggressively whistling at James. To this day, this is still something we laugh about, it being so strange, yet so effective. Over the next two years, as we grew as individuals, we also grew as close friends. I frequently made the long haul trip to visit Syracuse where James was finishing his Bachelor’s Degree at SUNY-ESF. Each and every visit brought us closer together – I would share my poetry with him and he would share his drawings with me. Connecting on a deeper level with each other felt effortless. The summer of 2013 began with near constant texting, phone calls and plans made for our first date on June 21st to a Yankees game. The Yankees won, and so did we, as it was the kind of first date that you normally only hear about or see in the movies. A few weeks later, on our first getaway to the Hamptons, we were strolling down a side street in Sag Harbor at sunset when we made it official: we were now boyfriend and girlfriend. Though we will forever consider June 21, 2013 to be our anniversary as it is the night we truly fell in love. We get to share our anniversary with the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. How lucky are we? From then on, we’ve adopted our two fur babies, Louie and Mia, lived in a few different apartments, traveled most of the Western United States, and have loved each other every minute along the way. Last fall, at our secret spot along the Hudson River, we got engaged. It was the most beautiful moment in the most beautiful place on the most beautiful day.
