Areas to Stay

We recommend guests to stay in what is known as the Historic Center of Lisbon (also referred to as the Santa Maria Maior) - specifically the Chiado, Alfama, or Baixa neighborhoods. We are staying in an Airbnb in Chiado if you want to be nearby! The Neighborhoods: - Chiado: Known as the sophisticated heart of Lisbon. Best for guests who want a classic European city experience with easy access to shopping, nice dinners, and rooftop bars. Very central and safe. It has a high density of 4- and 5-star hotels, making it easy for guests to book reliable accommodation. Most streets are paved and wide enough for Ubers / taxis to drop you off right by your accommodation. It's important to note that Chiado is on a hill. While not as steep as Alfama, you are always walking up or down, so it may not be the right pick for anyone with mobility issues or anyone bringing young children / strollers. - Alfama: This is the oldest part of Lisbon. Think narrow winding alleys, laundry hanging from balconies, Fado music spilling out of restaurants, and stunning viewpoints. There are many boutique Airbnbs and small guesthouses with character. The terrain can be difficult. It is a maze of steep hills, stairs, and uneven cobblestones. Many streets in Alfama are pedestrian-only or too narrow for cars. Guests may have to be dropped off at the perimeter and walk/carry luggage to accommodation. Getting a taxi to pick you up at the door of your accommodation is not likely, you'd probably have to walk to meet the car. - Baixa: This is the city's commercial center, rebuilt in a flat grid pattern after the 1755 earthquake. It's the best neighborhood with anyone with mobility concerns or bringing children, strollers, etc. It's flat, accessible, and great for navigation. It's also the major transport hub, so catching a train, tram, or taxi is easy. It can feel a bit deserted of "local life" at night as it's busier during the day

Travel Guidance

We're working on more travel guidance (recommended hotels, hotel blocks, etc.) Check back soon! Transportation: - Bolt: Bolt is the biggest competitor to Uber in Portugal. It is often slightly cheaper and has a larger fleet of drivers so Bolts usually come quicker than Ubers - FREENOW: This is the go-to app for summoning official licensed taxis (the black and green or beige cars). Unlike Uber/Bolt, FREENOW drivers can use the dedicated bus lanes, which gets you through traffic quicker - Uber and taxi: Self-explanatory!
