How We Met

Serendipity in Boston

Having spent the afternoon being badgered by her friend, Kathleen finally folded and agreed to go out for a girls' night at a bar they had been told about. Being new to the city, the ladies quickly found themselves lost and in need of help. Everywhere she looked, Kathleen didn't see a single person that looked friendly enough to ask for directions. Just as they were ready to give up hope, Kathleen spotted a group of guys up ahead and knew they were the ones to ask. The girls leapt over a small fence and approached the group at a jog (with the utmost finesse and grace). This magical approach was enough to catch the boys' attention, and of course they were happy to play the role of knights in shining armor. While they debated over the best directions to give, one of the guys caught Kathleen's eye with his dreamy Irish accent. He was quick to correct her, informing her that he was, in fact, from Scotland... oops! Despite the transgression, Kathleen knew he was still interested as he pleaded with his friends to accompany the girls safely to their destination. The boy lost the battle with his friends; and with that, the girls headed off alone into the Boston night. Several hours later, having never found the bar they were looking for, the girls ended up at Paddy O's in Faneuil Hall. As they made their way to the bar, Kathleen recognized a familiar face: it was the Scotsman! Somehow in a giant city with hundreds of bars and thousands of people, they had found their way back together. He came over, gave her a hug, and said: "Hi, my name is Andrew. It's lovely to see you again!"... and the rest is history.

The Proposal

April 14, 2018

It was the night of their 100th date, and the snow was falling in Toronto, Ontario. Andrew and Kathleen had spent the day exploring the city and were ready to head to dinner. Their meal was booked at the tallest point in the city - the top of the CN tower. Donning his favorite suit, and with Kathleen on his arm, Andrew was ready to change his life forever. As the plates were being cleared following a wonderful meal, he began to feel nervous for the first time since he picked up Kathleen for their first date. After what felt like 17 trips to the bathroom, each time to check that the little box in his jacket pocket was still safe, Andrew escorted Kathleen to the observatory at the top of the tower. Looking out over the twinkling lights of the city below, he interlaced his hand with hers. As their fingers touched, Andrew noticed he no longer felt nervous; he felt safe, he felt sure, he felt ready. Down on one knee, speaking those life changing words, Andrew's world finally felt at peace. As Kathleen said "yes", their future of spending forever together came clearly into focus.
