On a June weekend in 2016, Drew, a Navy Lt. wrapping up 7 years of naval service in Washington D.C. at the time, travelled to Austin, TX to see a hometown friend of his get married. At the same time, Mary, living in Houston at that time, was also making her way to the same wedding. Although probably crossing paths multiple times in the past through similar circle of friends, the two had never met. It wasn't until their friends' wedding reception when Drew happened to catch-up with Mary's best friend, Kayla, who then was joined by Mary (wearing a pink dress for the occasion) and Kirby as they were making their way to the adult bevvy stand. Mary, who was more interested in getting a refill on her drink, stood between Kirby and Kayla as they berrated Drew with questions in hopes of the two sparking an interest in each other. Even after discovering that Drew was moving to Houston in a few months, Mary was still more interested in getting that refill. Call it fate (or a giant boost of confidence), but Drew ended up catching the garter that night. Soon after, Drew made his move and the two were hitting the dance floor. As the night's wedding festivities concluded, Drew, like the Officer and Gentleman he is, gave Mary a kiss goodnight and went searching for late-night pizza on 6th street. Although sparks were flying, Drew made one almost fatal error...he didn't get Mary's number. After arriving back in D.C., he got her number from an LSU friend, and sent her a text saying how great it was meeting her and can't wait to hang out when he moves to Houston. After two months of making up for lost time by traveling to Central America and the Mediterranean, Drew bid farewell to D.C. and made the official move back to Houston to start graduate school. Although he wanted to call Mary immediately, he played it cool and waited a week. They met up at Down the Street Bar located in The Heights and picked up right where they left off. The rest was history.
