We met online (...I know, right?). He was looking for someone to share memes with, I was looking to delete my profile from the app. Then I saw it: the parody version of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song, written from a guy born in Kansas, got lost in the Navy and eventually ended up in Chicago. I was an Italian screenwriter, born on the Alps, ended up working as AuPair in the same place. I complimented his creativity and he sent me a meme back.
My sister was in town for a short vacation. Her first time in Chicago and my first time introducing ANY boyfriend to her. Jon picked her up at from the airport, fed her ice cream and entertained her like only a man still in his "promotional phase" can do. On a beautiful Saturday morning, we decide to meet half way with Jon's Aunt Judy and Uncle Peter, who live in Wisconsin, and have lunch together. We end up meeting at Bublitz, a cozy restaurant in the middle of nowhere. When the waitress approaches our table, she notices right away (weird, right?) a variety of different accents. Puzzled, she asks me how we all know each other. And so I start: "Well... I'm Italian and this is my sister Alessia, who has been living in London for the past three years... Oh, and that's my best friend Mela, born in Albania but grew up in Greece... And this is my boyfriend..." As I turn toward Jon, he's already on his knee with a ring in his hand. "Speaking of... " he says. "Will you be my American Citizen?". The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air all over again.
