The Dominican Peso is the official currency of the Dominican Republic. U.S. dollars and most major credit cards are commonly accepted throughout Punta Cana. If you would like to use Dominican Pesos during your trip, withdrawing cash from a local ATM provides the best exchange rate. When prompted at the ATM, select the local currency and continue without conversion — this allows your bank to handle the exchange rate rather than the ATM provider, which is typically more favorable.
Tap water in the Dominican Republic is not recommended for drinking. While showering, try to avoid swallowing water, and use bottled water when brushing your teeth and rinsing. At the resort, the ice is made from purified bottled water and is safe to enjoy. If you are off property, however, you may want to be more cautious when ordering drinks with ice.
While dining or participating in excursions OFF PROPERTY, you may notice a gratuity charge labeled “PROPINA” already included on your bill. If it is not included, a 10–15% tip is customary. At the all-inclusive resorts, tipping is not expected, but it is sincerely appreciated by the staff. Hospitality workers in the Dominican Republic often depend on tips. A few U.S. dollars for drinks, meals, or great service can make a meaningful difference. A little generosity goes a long way during your stay! Throw them a $20+ you'll have a personal butler for the week!
