If you’ve never been to the Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island County Park, it’s definitely one of those Lowcountry traditions you’ve got to experience. You drive through this three-mile route filled with hundreds of light displays—over 750 of them—and millions of twinkling lights. It really feels magical. And it’s not just a drive-through—you can stop, walk around, check out little holiday shops, hop on a festive train ride, see the giant sand sculpture, roast marshmallows, and even spend some time with Santa. It’s been around for decades—over 35 years now—and people come back year after year. If you go, don’t miss the Festival Express train, the life-size holiday cards, the sand sculptures, and of course, visiting Santa and his elves. It’s one of those things that just puts you right in the holiday spirit. Make sure to get there early as there will be traffic.
There’s also Christmas on the Square in Summerville, which is put on by the Junior Service League. They decorate Hutchinson Square with more than 70 Christmas trees, and it’s honestly such a fun place to walk around during the holidays. It usually runs from early through late December and kicks off with a tree lighting ceremony that really gets everyone in the spirit. While you’re there, you can wander into little spots around the square—there’s a candy shop, a pizza place, a coffee shop, and plenty more to check out. The whole area has this cozy, small-town charm… it honestly feels like you’ve stepped right into a Hallmark movie.
