Our couple had a big day familiarizing themselves with Lakewood. After dinner at Avo, they'd decided to grab a couple of beers and head to Edgewater Park, a fast favorite of theirs. They picked a bench next to the "Cleveland" postcard sign, an indication of a picture-worthy spot in the city. It was a perfect evening, a cap on a perfect day. They sat in the dark, enjoying the cool breezes from the lake and the view of the skyline. Behind them, to the left, a large family was enjoying a cookout and trying to fly kites....but failing. A little girl confidently took control of a kite previously piloted, unsuccessfully, by an adult. With the confidence and fervor of an Olympian, she took off! Though the kite hopped along behind her, digging into the dirt at each contact with land. On their other side were two people, friends maybe, who looked to be working on something by flashlight. After awhile, one of them had an unintelligible exchange with passersby then walked over towards our couple, large piece of paper in hand. They'd first thought he was going to try to sell them something but soon found out that he'd been working on was his very first painting. He held his phone as an improvised museum light as he asked how they thought he'd done. It was a moody abstract work, one they'd have been happy to hang on their wall, and they told him so! He thanked the couple, so excited by their reaction, and strutted back to his friend. With their beverages finished and the park's closing time near, Andrea asked if Josh wanted to head back. He paused and replied, "Not quite yet." Andrea sat back against the bench, happy to enjoy the breeze for a little longer. They sat in silence for a moment. Josh, looking at the lake, asked if she'd be interested in getting their families together for a party. Andrea turned to look at him, and he had a ring box in hand. He'd managed to find her favorite ring from her favorite jeweler. She said yes! Well, it was more of an, "Uh....YEAH!!!"
