We met at the Habig Halloween Bash in Sheridan, Indiana. Due to the pandemic, and luckily for us, it was a smaller turnout than their usual 300 person costume bash in the barn. Nick approached Jen--a disco diva in a curly haired blonde wig--in his custom fitted race suit. When Jen found out this wasn't just a costume, Nick showed her pictures of his asphalt super late model racecar and Jen gave him her number. After Jen's friends pulled her wig off during the Groovesmash band's set, showing off her dreads, they had their first date a couple weeks (7-10 days later - thanks COVID!) at Texas Roadhouse, and the rest is history.
At a friend's wedding in September 2021 (shout out Harenchars!), Jen and Nick went for dessert at the traditional Pittsburgh cookie table and found a batch of "I Want to Marry You" cookies. Jen stole the sign and gave it to Nick on the dance floor that night. They spent the next year discussing their future as a couple. Nick carefully selected the diamond and setting all on his own, and made arrangements with the bride's sister Kristen to make the proposal a day Jen would never forget. Her terms were simple, surprise her, but not in a public place, and have friends and family ready to celebrate afterwards! Seems simple, but as the 5pm hour quickly approached on a Friday afternoon, Nick paced the hallway in their home as Jen sat at her work computer typing away and shouting that it "isn't going great in here! Do we have to go to dinner? Bring me a shot, I'm over this!" Nick took her word and entered the office with a Jameson for her, a Fireball for him, set the drinks down and disappeared. He returned moments later and Jen reached for the drink. Nick stopped her, saying "Honey, before we do this, I have something I need to ask you" and got down on one knee at her desk. Jen cackled in her jammies, "RIGHT HERE!?" He showed the ring and she grabbed it from the box and put it on her own ring finger. She doesn't remember if he even had time to ask the question. Nick swears he did. They were engaged!
