The Archdiocese of Houston organized a volunteer event amongst several churches in February 2019. Volunteer opportunities included helping at the food bank, serving soup at a shelter, and assisting the retired priests. Gerardo went to the event and registered for the prison ministry - writing letters to inmates and praying over them. Mayra happened to be the coordinator for another group initially, but a mixup caused her to be the coordinator for the prison ministry. The group went out to the local prison and prayed the rosary outside for the inmates. Mayra had the phone numbers of all the group members and reached out after the event to stay in touch. Mayra and Gerardo reconnected through social media and months later went on their first date to Heights Biergarten. In typical fashion, Mayra showed up late, but that did not stop the love between the two to begin to bud.
