Our Story

~Where it Began, and Everything that Followed~

Maya and John met at work in the spring of 2021. Maya had started at Wonder in late 2020, and John started in May 2021. John was in charge of managing the truck fleet and repair team… and Chef Maya? She was a COR (Chef on the Road), out there driving and cooking in the trucks. John will tell you Maya’s primary responsibility was breaking his trucks. Maya would strongly disagree and simply say, “I knew if I called it in, John would come fix it.” After a few months of “truck-related incidents,” it became very obvious to everyone around them that there was something more going on. Somewhere between service calls and shared days at work, they found themselves drawn to each other in a way that felt easy and natural. What started as small moments quickly turned into something neither of them could ignore. Their first date was at Jose Tejas. John didn’t know it at the time, but that would go down as the most affordable “date night” of their entire relationship… because since then, they’ve stumbled into a whole world of very special dining experiences. But that first night will always hold its place as “where it all began.” A few months later, John stepped into Maya’s world in a big way at her “Celebration of Maya” party, meeting what felt like hundreds of the people who make up her life. It was still the height of COVID, so this was more of a belated college graduation party for Maya. That night, he told her he loved her… and in true Maya fashion, had to say it more than once before she believed him. Not long after officially becoming a couple, they spent their first Christmas together in quarantine after both catching COVID from work. It wasn’t exactly traditional… think no-contact gift exchanges, pizza rolls, and John’s mom’s famous Christmas cookies. But somehow, it was perfect. In that quiet, slowed-down moment, they realized how much they simply loved being together. That time together made one thing very clear: they simply didn’t want to do life without each other. Since then, it’s been three ++ years of doing everything side by side… from Maya’s annual “birthday month” trips to building custom lightsabers at Disney for John’s 30th, camping adventures with Ironforge, spontaneous day trips, endless brunches, and nights out exploring new restaurants with the incredible group of friends they’ve built along the way. And through it all, one thing has remained constant… Maya still calls….. John still shows up….. Just for slightly bigger things now. 💛

The Proposal

July 12th 2025

The Proposal Right after their fourth Christmas together, John knew what everyone else already suspected, he had found his forever in Maya. So naturally, he did what any rational person would do… he called Jarred. Yes, that Jarred. One of his oldest friends. To design and build a custom ring. Because of course, nothing about Maya was ever going to be ordinary. A few months (and likely many design debates) later, the ring was in his hands. Perfect. Personal. Completely her. Now came the harder part… how do you propose to Maya in a way that actually feels worthy of her? Before John could start planning, he had a different but equally important question to ask her parents, he had to ask for their blessings. John nervously asked to meet with them, and was returned with an enthusiastic yes! I’m sure they knew why he would reach out to them solo for the first time in 3 years. After catching up, John showed Manish and Nita the ring. With smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes, they happily said “of course!” And then later on Manish made sure that they were clear that they gave their blessing :) With that, the plan was officially in motion. John knew two things: it had to be meaningful, and Maya had to be surrounded by the people she loves most. So he brought her to Point Pleasant Beach, a place filled with his own childhood memories, summers, family, and tradition. Dinner was perfect… though fittingly, they discovered it was the restaurant’s last night in business. A dramatic touch, but the night was just getting started. Because of course, things couldn’t go entirely smoothly. On the way to “the spot,” Maya’s dress experienced what can only be described as a catastrophic failure. Cue a frantic call to Nancy (John’s mom,) a quick detour to the beach house, and a sewing kit that may or may not have been from World War II. Somehow, they pulled it together and got back on track. Hand in hand, they walked down NJ Avenue toward the shoreline, the same path John had walked countless times growing up. They passed a boardwalk bench dedicated to his grandparents, Lolo and Pop, a symbol of enduring, unbreakable love. And then… the moment. A blanket lined with candles and flowers, beautifully set by his “engagement crew”, Mattison (best man), Cassie (grooms-woman), and Maggie (officiant and bridesmaid). John got down on one knee. He looked up at Maya, overwhelmed, emotional… and completely unable to get the words out. But he didn’t need to. Through her own tears, Maya simply nodded yes. An embrace, a kiss… and suddenly, the entire Jersey Shore felt like it erupted in applause. Cheers, hugs, and joyful chaos followed as the moment sank in. But John wasn’t done. He took her hand and led her down the boardwalk to Martell's Tiki Bar, a place filled with years of memories, dancing, and laughter. Waiting there was a room full of their favorite people. More hugs. More squeals. More love. And a night spent exactly the way their story has always been written, surrounded by the people who love them most, celebrating something even bigger than the moment itself.
