About seven months after they started dating, Maya and Evan took a little day trip to Three Oaks, Michigan. They wanted to enjoy Michigan's fall colors and play cards on the bar at Journeyman Distillery. At that point Journeyman's public operation was a small tasting room with cocktails. After a drink and a game of Rummy (that Maya will surely claim to have won), they were about to head out to visit shops around town. But the rustic staircase of the historic factory paired with the "closed for renovation" sign was a little too tempting for Evan, who grabbed Maya's hand and insisted on taking a peek. The giant room upstairs, which was once a buggy whip and corset "feather bone" factory, seemed to now serve as a break room for the employees. Large bowls of citrus ready to be cut for garnish sat at one end under a handmade sign, and the beautiful old windows on both sides illuminated the raw space. "This would be a great venue," they said. "It would be great to get married here," they said. Now it is. And soon they will.
