A tale as old as time... Boy swipes right Girl swipes right Isn't that how all the storybook fairytales begin? If you've followed our journey at all, you will know this one has been going for a while now! Let's start at the beginning. Mattson was finishing his last year of medical residency in Colorado. He was in SLC visiting family when he happened to get on Tinder and swipe right on the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. (I bet you can't guess which one of us is writing this huh?!). Turns out he was only in town for a couple of days, so when we finally began talking, he was already back home. After 1.5 months of phone calls, texting and video chatting, we decided that the other person was most likely not a serial killer and that we should meet. On October 21, 2017 Mattson made the long drive out to Utah to take me on our first date. It went well :) For the next year we did our best to see each other as often as we could and spent time adventuring and getting to know one another. In December of 2018 we made our relationship official! The next year was filled with travel to New Zealand (where we first said we loved each other and I almost threw up off the side of a boat while whale watching), Alaska (where I actually did throw up off of a boat while whale watching) and many more amazing places while continuing to be in a long distance relationship. In January of 2020 my belongings moved up to Thermopolis and on February 14, 2020 I officially made the move.
In October of 2020 we received word that our name had been drawn in a lottery for an unguided snowmobile trip into Yellowstone for 3 days and 2 nights. We were allowed to bring up to 5 snowmobiles with us, so we decided to invite some of our closest friends on this amazing adventure. Winter in Wyoming and the surrounding states hasn't been very kind. Not much snow at all. However, the night before our trip, Yellowstone was hit with almost 30 inches of snow. What did this mean? Well...it meant that the east entrance to Yellowstone was closed. We wouldn't be able to get in. We stayed positive and put the good vibes out there that on Sunday the road would open and the avalanche team would say we could enter the park. Bright and early Sunday we were able to begin our adventure. The plan was to enter the east gate, drive to Old Faithful and then head to Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel for the night. This plan would entail us driving over 118 miles on the first day. After driving the first 30 miles in -15 degree weather, the plan needed to change. We were slow moving and for safety reasons we decided to just drive straight to the hotel. Along the way we encountered a pack of 14 wolves, coyotes, elk, deer and Mattson and I were even chased by a very angry Bison! Day 2- We hit the road at sunlight and the crew was energized and ready for what was to come. The weather was substantially warmer than the day before, so spirits seemed to be higher. We made it to Old Faithful about 10 minutes before she erupted. As I was standing there filming the beauty of what was happening, I noticed that everyone I had been able to see out of my peripheral vision was no longer there. I slowly turned around and Mattson was on one knee. He told me some of the things he loved about me and asked me to build a family and a life with him. I said YES! Pictures were taken, bubbles were popped and our hands and bodies were thawed in the warming yurt.
