Our Story

Our story began in Brampton, Ontario, long before love was even an option. Hockey rinks and high school parties - this one is a classic tale of falling for the forbidden. Although there had always been something there, it wasn’t until after college that that first date at AMC Courtney Park happened. With an addiction to theatre popcorn that runs in the family, Mattie didn’t even purchase a bag to ensure he’d project a “cool vibe”. It worked so well, in fact, that Jacqueline made the first move that very night. With Vanessa (Mattie’s sister/Jacqueline's BFF) still away at university, it was decided to keep this blossoming romance as far away from her as possible. Nothing tests a bond like losing your best friend to your brother. Nothing. Unfortunately they waited entirely too long and months later, Vanessa returned home from school only to be blindsided to find her best friend at her house uninvited. They spent the next few years going to concerts together, frequenting movie theatres, eating at the same 3 restaurants and growing closer with each others’ families. Mattie discovered a love for wood oven pizza and olives. Jacqueline gained a respect for The Beatles and The Masters. A true coming together of cultures. Eventually, they moved to Toronto to be closer to Jacqueline’s work as a video editor and Mattie’s pursuit of a music career.

The Proposal

The years in the city brought them closer together and the inevitable happened earlier 2019, when Mattie popped the question. After a dinner date at 'Fresh' with a couple of their friends, Mattie brought Jacqueline to 'Free Solo' at the Cinesphere. Nothing screams proposal like a documentary about a rock climber! Afterwards they went back to their apartment and Mattie had her listen to a song he had written for her, one she hadn’t heard yet. When the song ended she turned around in shock to see a ring. Bursting into tears she said “thank you” and they went back to celebrate with friends downtown excited, for what the future would hold. It is still unsure if this engagement is official because he never actually asked and she never said “Yes”.
