Some love stories begin with a first date. Marco and Matti's began long before they ever met. In January 2014, Matti and her mom, Tracy were shopping at the Columbia Mall when an unexpected and frightening event caused the mall to go into chaos. As they hurried to leave, they came across a woman in the parking lot who was visibly shaken and searching for her husband after becoming separated from him during the panic. Matti and Tracy invited her into their car so she could wait somewhere safe while they tried to locate him. As they sat together talking, they learned she was from the Silver Spring area and had two sons (one around Matti's age). Eventually, the woman was reunited with her husband, everyone went their separate ways, and life moved on. At this time, none of them realized that this brief encounter would one day become part of a much bigger story. Years later, Matti and Marco were both at the University of Maryland around the same time, sharing mutual friends but somehow never crossing paths. It wasn't until May 30, 2021 that they finally met and began dating. A few months into their relationship, while talking about a recent news story, Matti shared the experience she had at the Columbia Mall years earlier. Marco paused and said that his parents had been there that day too. As they talked through the details, they slowly realized something incredible: The woman Matti and Tracy had helped that day was Marco's mom, Rita. Looking back, it's hard not to see God's hand in that moment years before Matti and Marco ever knew each other. What seemed like a chance encounter at the time became a small but meaningful thread in a story that was still unfolding. Their story continued to grow, leading to one very special day on August 24, 2025. Marco planned a beautiful surprise and chartered a sailboat in St. Michaels, Maryland. Marco asked Matti to spend forever with him and she said yes! And now, they can't wait to celebrate the next chapter of their story with all of you.
