Sometimes when we tell people how we met, they don't believe us. They don't believe in love at first twirl, or that Matthias almost chased me down a Brooklyn sidewalk, and they certainly don't believe that I fell in love with someone in one night and left without leaving any contact information or even saying goodbye. But it's all true. We did, I did, he did. We met at a house party. My really good friend moved in with an acquaintance of mine that just happened to be one of Matthias's best friends. I spent the first half hour of the night fishing around for information on Matthias, before forcing information out of Aidan (who, let's face it, was more than happy to give it to me because I'm really cute and Matthias really needed a hot distraction). I concluded my recon and went in. We both "happened" into the kitchen, needing something out of the sink, and I made the first move. "Hey, I'm Rayna." Matthias introduced himself, and almost immediately complimented my dress, which was the whole point of the dress. So I said, "It twirls! Wanna see?" Matt nodded, and I twirled my little heart out and watched the heart eyes start to grow. A little while later, I went to the restroom, and Aidan ran over to Matthias to ask what he thought of me and if he thought I was pretty or funny or anything really. And while the heart eyes may have been growing, the brain had not been, because Matthias had no idea what Aidan was talking about until there was a solid (but metaphorical) thump on the back of the head with Aidan saying, "SHE'S FLIRTING WITH YOU. YOU SHOULD FLIRT BACK." And Matthias had the epiphany of his lifetime. I came out of the bathroom and Matthias hung with me the rest of the night. We played video games very very badly and they all went to grab food and he brought me back extra ranch and I fell in love in the span of about three and a half hours. And then it was around midnight and the friend that I arrived with wanted to leave and I had promised that we'd leave together, so we did. But Matthias was in the bathroom or in a bedroom looking at something or somewhere not attached to me and I made the decision that if it was meant to be that he would find me. So I put my shoes on and right as I was about to leave the apartment, he walked out of the room he was in, our eyes met and I just said "Bye now," and followed my friend out the door. Matthias spent the first thirty seconds wondering if he should run out into the night and follow me, but decided that might be a little over the top and decided instead to spend the rest of the night badgering everyone at the party for something, anything, any way to get in contact with me. I don't know if you've asked drunk people for information before, but it's not easy. It took them a while before someone could muster up the energy or brain power to remember my Instagram. So he scrolled through my profile and sent me a message that I would respond to in the morning. And now, here we are, five years later. I always make sure to say bye before I walk out the door.
