They first met in 2017 when Erin noticed a friend and one of his teammates(it was Matt!) walking late at night near campus. Erin pulled over, and Matthew and the teammate got a ride to campus in the back of Erin's Mustang. They had similar friend groups, but never really talked again until 2020, when Erin joined the Lourdes Women's Lacrosse team, and since it was her first time playing, her stick needed restringing. Several of the men's lacrosse players told her to reach out to Matt Thompson as he is the best at restringing sticks. Erin texted Matt and asked if he would be able to restring her stick after her practice if it needed it. Matt replied that he would absolutely be able to do it. Erin didn't text back for a few days, and Matt reached out to see if her stick still needed work. Erin said the coaches think it will be okay, and no work is needed. That night, both Matt and Erin went to the same party, where Matt sat down next to Erin and started to talk about lacrosse, and then movies. He asked if she had seen a few specific movies, she said no(because she doesn't really watch movies!). He said "Well, we should get together and watch them!" Erin went over to Matt's dorm to watch a movie a few nights later with Matt, his roommates, and their girlfriends. On the way up, Erin asked what movie they were watching tonight. Matt replied, "Silence of the Lambs" and since Erin did not watch movies, especially scary movies, that was the first and last scary movie they watched together. However, they became best friends and shared every moment they possibly could ever since. A year into dating, Matt told Erin that he has never strung a girl's stick. He said he would have learned how to string a girl's stick just as an excuse to talk to her.
Matthew surprised Erin on a weekend trip to Petoskey, Michigan with an engagement ring and a day of shopping! Matthew choose to propose under the birch tree that Erin and her sisters have been taking photos in front of for over 25 years. Matt told Erin after that he planned to do it there because he wanted to take their future children to the same tree one day. It was incredibly special day for the two of them that they will remember forever!
