Both Claire and Matt attended SVSU. They met in the music department. Their first interaction consisted of him asking her why she was always at her locker. The longer they went to school together, the more they connected. One semester, during Claire's instrumental conducting final, Matt played the trumpet solo. She fell in love. Their first date was at the annual Detroit Zoo lights in 2019 and the rest is history.

Matt knows Claire so well, he managed to nail her DREAM proposal without her even telling him. It involved many people, mainly his 8th-grade band class. Matt asked Claire if she would guest conduct at his spring concert in March of 2021 when her student teaching classroom went virtual. She got to pick the piece, she got to work with the group, and in the end, she walked away with a shiny new thing on her finger. During the concert, Claire mainly played in the flute section with the other 8th-graders. After she finished conducting her piece, Matt turned to the audience that the 8th-graders had something to ask her. As they were yelling, "will you marry Mr. Ingersoll," Matt was down on one knee beaming at Claire. She said yes! Then had to go back to the flute section to play the hardest piece of the night.
