Question

I'm invited to a Tisch and Bedeken, what is that? Do I need to be Jewish to attend?

Answer

The word "Tisch" translates to "table". The Tisch is a pre-wedding celebration where the groom's male friends, relatives, and the Rabbi toast the groom, offer congratulations, and sign the Ketubah (the marriage contract). Concurrently to the Tisch, the Bride gathers with female friends and relatives who offer congratulations and well wishes in a ceremony called the Kabbalat Panim. The Bedeken is "the veiling ceremony". At the conclusion of the Tisch, the groom is escorted by male friends and relatives in a celebratory procession to meet the bride and cover her face with her veil. The Bedeken will serve as Matthew and Camellia's "first look". All guests, regardless of religion, are invited and encouraged to attend. We recognize that the Tisch and Bedeken are gender-based events. Please join either event according to your own comfort. The ceremony will immediately follow the Bedeken. All guests should feel welcome to first join the celebration at the start of the ceremony. Please refer to the schedule tab for the start time of each event.
