How We Met

May 2013

Amy and Matthew met on the first day of their internships with John Deere in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Amy, from Commerce Twp., Michigan, and Matthew, from Glenview, Illinois, were both brought out to Cedar Falls to work as engineers for John Deere. Amy immediately struck up a conversation with Matthew as he sat down two seats to her left during the intern orientation meeting. She remembers thinking she should've swapped seats with her friend, so that they could talk more. Matthew on the other hand will say that he first noticed Amy while she was moving into the hotel that all the interns were staying at, several days prior to that orientation. However, Amy's parents were busy helping her move, so he settled for a simple "hello" instead of striking up a long conversation.

The Proposal

May 2019

Matthew proposed while he and Amy visited the gardens at Lyndale Park in Minneapolis, MN on May 12th, 2019; this was 6 years after the first day they met. Matthew started out the week writing love notes to Amy; this was not out of the ordinary. Although, it was suspicious that we was dating them with "Monday", then "Tuesday", and so on. Amy says she knew right then and there that Matthew was going to propose on "Sunday". Little did Amy know, Matthew had been planning and holding onto Amy's great-grandmother's wedding ring since December of 2018. He was hoping to propose to Amy while they were in New Zealand in April! Amy, however, mentioned during their trip, how cliche it would be to have a destination engagement, and how unlikely it would be to ever to able to travel back there to visit. And so the ring stayed in his pocket all through the 12 hour hike up and down a mountain in southern New Zealand, remaining there even through the 18 hour plane ride back home. Fast forward back to May 2019. Like true nerds, Matthew and Amy were in Minneapolis for a seminar on astrophysics and cosmology, put on by their favorite particle physicist (yes... they have a favorite particle physicist), Brian Cox. Matthew's grand plan had been to take Amy to the gardens at Lyndale Park the next morning, walking through the trees and flowers, eventually ending at the romantic rose garden, inside their famous rose thicket house. There he would present her with the "Sunday" love letter, and get down on one knee. After a short walk through the rose garden, rather than arriving at the planned proposal spot, they arrived at an empty concrete slab. THEY REMOVED THE ROSE THICKET HOUSE! Panicked, Matthew awkwardly led Amy back through various parts of the park they had already seen, hoping to find a suitable backup spot. Atop a hill, and under a large tree overlooking the park, Matthew finally got down on one knee, presented the "Sunday" love letter, and asked Amy to marry him. She said Yes!
