The world brought Matt and Ashley together at SUNY Geneseo in Upstate New York. Matt was in a fraternity, Kappa Sigma, and Ashley was in a sorority, Sigma Delta Tau. They had crossed paths at numerous events and shared multiple friends; however, it was not until the end of Ashley's sophomore year that they came to know each other. Ashley and Matt went on their first date at Bank Street Cafe for brunch where they discussed their dreams and aspirations for post-graduate life. It was at that moment that they knew this was different! Ashley and Matt officially started dating on September 1st, 2014. To this day they still enjoy going on brunch dates and dreaming of their lives together.
Matt and Ashley always talked about their future together, but he would end every conversation with “well, we aren’t getting engaged for 10 years so we have a long time to think about it!”. Every time a friend would comment about them not being engaged, another “5 years” was jokingly tagged on. Matt and Ashley travel together every year, and they decided on a 16-day island-hopping adventure to Greece for their 2019 trip. Unbeknownst to Ashley, he had been looking at rings and asked her parents for permission to marry her months before the trip! All of her friends knew for months that he was going to propose in Greece and were amazingly good at keeping this secret. Matt planned the surprise proposal for the first day they landed in Mykonos. He had been messaging the hotel for over a month to coordinate every detail, including a secret photographer, dozens of rose petals, a breathtaking ocean view, and her favorite champagne. The hotel manager surprised them both by upgrading them to the nicest room in the hotel at check-in and offered to give them a "private tour" of the hotel grounds. After convincing Ashley to get dressed early for dinner that evening, Matt took Ashley to the hotel lobby for their tour. The first stop: a beautiful balcony overlooking the ocean and a surprise dream proposal! The remainder of their trip has been lovingly deemed their "engagementmoon" and is certainly going to be a trip they will never forget!
