Question

What happens during a Greek Orthodox wedding ceremony?

Answer

Glad you asked! We’re so excited to celebrate with you and want to share an overview of some unique traditions in our ceremony. The Rings The ceremony begins with the exchange of wedding rings, blessed by the priest and placed on the couple’s right hands. The Koumbaros (spiritual sponsor) then swaps the rings between them three times, symbolizing their unity. The Koumbaros / Koumbara The Koumbaros (male) or Koumbara (female) is a deeply important figure who assists with key parts of the ceremony, including exchanging rings, placing the stefana, and guiding the couple during the ceremonial walk. This role reflects tradition, trust, and connection. The Lambádes (Candles) Two large candles, called lambádes, are lit by the priest and placed near the couple. These symbolize the guiding light for their new life together and are often held by the Koumbaros during parts of the ceremony, reminding everyone of the couple’s shared path and support. The Crowning (Stefana) One of the most iconic moments is the crowning. The bride and groom wear thin wreaths called stefana, connected by a ribbon, symbolizing their unity, bond, and shared future. The Koumbaros swaps the crowns three times, marking the start of their life together. The Common Cup The couple each takes three sips from a shared cup of wine, symbolizing their willingness to share all aspects of life. The Ceremonial Walk After the crowning, the couple walks around the altar three times, joined by the ribbon from the stefana. Led by the priest and followed by the Koumbaros holding the ribbon, this walk represents their first steps as a married couple and is the moment they are officially wed. Things Happen in Threes Many actions are repeated three times, reflecting the Holy Trinity—a key theme in Greek Orthodox traditions. No Vows Unlike many other ceremonies, traditional Greek weddings don’t include personal vows. Instead, the rituals express the couple’s commitment and the significance of their journey ahead.
