Matt remembers the first night of Vintage Church LA’s newly launched School of Discipleship in the fall of 2024, when he made just one request for the community group he’d signed up to lead—he wanted it to be all-male. The church couldn’t accommodate due to an overwhelming number of sign-ups (praise God!), and Matt said he’d give the co-ed group a try. A few weeks later Sarah showed up, and a few weeks after that, group members started asking each of them separately why they hadn’t gone on a date yet. He asked her out in January (finally, she thought) and for their first date they painted pottery at Color Me Mine in Santa Monica. Immediately, both of them recognized their ability to be their authentic selves around each other, and to bring out the other’s best qualities. Listening to Luke Combs on a drive to the Indian Wells tennis tournament in March, they agreed they really were, like the song says, “Better Together.” On the drive back, he asked her to be his girlfriend. Over the past year they’ve laughed a lot, traveled, played tennis, read and watched the entire Harry Potter series (Matt’s first time!), cooked and hosted dinner parties together. They’ve shared their faith journeys, hopes and dreams, struggles, friends and eventually families with each other. As the relationship progressed, each felt a remarkable sense of peace and security about where it was inevitably headed. Matt proposed in January (finally, Sarah thought again), on the same day they ran the Rose Bowl Half Marathon. Though it was one week shy of a year since their first date, Matt quoted the movie 'When Harry Met Sally' when he dropped to one knee: “When you figure out the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” As a couple, we love bringing people together from different areas of our lives. So we cannot wait to see you all mixing and mingling, and will be so excited to celebrate this joyful day together!
