We met in pretty typical fashion this day in age. Matt swiped right, while Nicole let her friend, Rachel choose her potential matches. Luckily, for Matt and Nicole, Rachel is a fellow dog lover and Chance caught her eye leading her to swipe right (ultimate wingman!) Matt stood out from the rest by telling a joke — even if the punchline wasn’t exactly on point. He won Nicole over with the ice breaker. After 2 weeks of messaging back and forth, Matt asked Nicole out on a date to Legion Brewery.
Our first date was at Legion Brewing, one of many breweries native to Charlotte. Matt chose this spot as a meet in the middle type place and soon learned they happen to make Nicole’s favorite beer, Juicy Jay (it was meant to be folks). We got to talking and then it started to rain. Ever the meteorologist, Nicole said the storm wouldn’t be that bad and wanted to stay outside on the patio. Everyone around us went inside. Matt sat on his phone. And wouldn’t you know it, the rain never really picked up, but the conversation sure did! Talking to each other was easy and effortless. So effortless in fact, we both realized that if we didn’t leave immediately we would miss our separate dinner reservations. Reluctantly, date #1 came to a close even though we both wanted to keep it going. Looking back, leaving knowing we both wanted more is a pretty damn good way to end a first date.
Nicole was intrigued and Matt must have been, too. Because when she told him after he asked her out again that she would be out of town the next three weekends (a nail in the coffin for any fresh relationship) he not only kept messaging her, he did the old fashioned thing and called her on the phone. After a few dates and another few weeks of travel (it was wedding season!) we knew we had something special. A year later, Matt proposed to Nicole back where it all started - in front of Legion Brewery.
