Matt and I met our freshman year of college. We had a mutual friend Jordan whom I lived with. With hopes of setting us up she showed me a picture of a few guys and asked if I thought any of them were cute. I pointed out the blonde and she was proceeded to tell me about her plan. Next thing I know Jordan invited Matt over to hang out. I was especially nervous, I said hello and hid in my room until he went home. Luckily he came back again and again and again. He spent a lot of his free time hanging out at our house and we eventually became friends. Soon enough we were texting and flirting pretty regularly and Matt hung around even more. However this flirting went on for quite some time as neither of us made our feelings very clear. Matt went home for the summer but we stayed in contact. The following school year when Matt moved back to campus we regularly made time to see one another. Eventually I decided to sit him down and make my feelings known. Unfortunately I was a little unclear about my actual feelings and due to some miscommunications Matt didn't understand what I was trying to tell him. Thinking it was what I wanted, he told me that we shouldn't date, prayed over me and we parted ways. Fast forward a week and I was sitting in my room, thinking about Matt and feeling pretty sad that dating wasn't an option for us. Jordan called for me and I ran downstairs annoyed that the front door was wide open. "Why is the door open??" I said as I went to close it. "There is someone outside for you!!!" everyone yelled as they sat in the living room knowing exactly what was about to happen. I walked outside to find Matt standing on the front porch. He asked me to go on a date with him, of course I said yes and the rest is history.
Matt's parents gifted him with a trip for himself and a friend to California as a 'congrats' for finishing his undergraduate degree. Matt told me about gift and asked me to join. I jumped on board and we planned the trip together. (Thanks Joe and Lori!!) A couple weeks before the trip I had a lot of friends asking "Do you think Matt will propose on the trip?" I always said no. I thought it was way too obvious to propose on a trip, Matt would make it more of a surprise. About 2 days before the trip I had a couple friends really building up the idea of a proposal so I painted my nails. We flew to California and had the most wonderful and beautiful trip. After our third day of the trip my nail polish was beginning to chip. I sat at the counter across from Matt and said "My friends thought you were gonna propose on this trip so I painted my nails, but I know you aren't going to " as I picked all of my nail polish off. The last stop of the trip was Lake Tahoe. When we arrived we had no plan but Matt had one request, that we hike to Eagle Point. I started to get suspicious. Knowing his parents had gotten engaged at Lake Tahoe, I thought that maybe he would propose. Well we drove around the lake, hiked Eagle Point and there was no engagement. So, I was absolutely convinced there wouldn't be one. We got in the car to head back to our hotel, clean up, and go out for dinner. Luckily I was able to get us a seat at a packed restaurant and we enjoyed a beautiful dinner overlooking the lake. While we were eating Matt suggested we go to the beach for sunset pictures. We finished our food and left as soon as we could. We drove to the beach, parked at the top of a hill and sprinted towards the water hoping to catch the last bit of the sun. We set up the camera took some pictures, adjusted the lighting and took some more. While we had the camera set on a timer Matt got down on one need and popped the question! I said yes, we called our moms and celebrated with warm cookies!
