About an hour from Billings, Red Lodge is a classic Montana mountain town. Wander through the historic downtown filled with boutiques, coffee shops, and ice cream stops, or visit the Carbon County Historical Society Museum for local history. Outdoor lovers can hike nearby trails or take a drive on the Beartooth Highway, often called “the most beautiful road in America.” In the winter, it’s also home to Red Lodge Mountain Ski Resort.

Nestled in the mountains near Yellowstone’s northeast entrance, Cooke City offers a true mountain-town feel and is perfect for a day of exploring or a scenic drive. Pairing Red Lodge and Cooke City makes for a stunning drive through the Beartooth Pass (seasonal, typically open late May through mid-October).

Yellowstone (day trip): Enter through the North Entrance at Gardiner and cruise to Lamar Valley for sunrise or sunset—think roaming bison, elk, and huge, wide-open views. It’s about 2.5–3 hours from Billings, and the Gardiner→Lamar→Cooke City road is usually open year-round, making this an easy, unforgettable adventure.
