How We Met

Hinge, Guac, and a Pandemic: A Modern Love Story

Devin and Mary Grace met November 2019 while living in Boston, the way all great 21st-century love stories begin: on Hinge. That first date? Picture a UK basketball fan dragging her date to a so called "UK bar" in Boston… that turned out to be completely empty. Like, only you and the bartender empty. Thankfully, plan B involved guac and a Mexican bar down the street in Faneuil Hall, followed by drinks at The Sail Loft, a spot that accidentally turned into "one of their places" before they even realized it. Fast forward a month, quarantine began. While the world shut down, Mary Grace was a full-time COVID Nurse. Apparently the potential germs didn't scare off Devin, as the two spent every weekend together. Quarantine basically fast-tracked their relationship by skipping all the usual dating stuff—no drinks at the bar, movie dates, grabbing a cup of coffee or going out to eat. Instead, they made up their own fun right in that Beacon Hill shoe-box-of an apartment. Homemade Chick-fil-A night, kitchen dance parties, perfecting their guac recipe, blind alcoholic seltzer taste test (don't judge, what else was there to do?), countless Netflix documentaries, and meaningful conversations were had. They made it official in 2021 at a Steelers vs. Browns game (what better way to start of a relationship than a divided household?), did the long-distance thing for 18 months, and in July 2023, Mary Grace moved out to meet Devin in San Diego. You can take a girl out of Cleveland but you can't take Cleveland out of the girl, so they made the cross country jump back to The 'Land in April 2026. Yes, Devin is really enjoying living in Browns territory now. So, that’s how an almost-failed first date and a global pandemic turned into 8/14/26. Devin and MG cannot wait to celebrate with their most treasured people that have supported them the past 4 years, all in one big room. Let's do this!
